Persuasive Texts "Should There Be Zoos?"
In 5th Grade we are working on persuasive texts and the role of debate in our world. Before we started talking about the debate about zoos and the pros and cons of having zoos, students had to take a survey on their current thinking. We then read an article written by a high school student about some of the issues regarding zoos and animal treatment. Some students changed their thinking based on this article. Our next step is to study the text, Should There Be Zoos? by Thomas Stead. This persuasive text covers some of the pros and the cons. Some of wonderings include, "How does our own Minnesota Zoo deal with the treatment of animals? Are all zoos the same? Do zoos have report cards? How many zoos are there in the U.S.A.? Who is doing a good job in how animals area treated? What would it be like if we didn't have zoos? How would people learn about animals? Would some animals become extinct without the help and support of zoos?" There is much to learn and research on this debate. What are good sources for this topic? Could we talk to someone at the Minnesota Zoo? How will our thinking change? We will participate in a debate at the end of our research!
